CODENOLL TECHNOLOGY CORPORATION   1980 - 1991
Senior Vice President, Co-founder and Board Member
Managed Engineering and Manufacturing Department. Codenoll was the first fiber optic LAN Company. Built to $10M+ NASDAQ listed business with worldwide installations.
  • Engineered first commercial fiber optic LAN.
  • Developed first 10 Mbps Ethernet network using plastic optical fiber.
  • Developed first high speed red LEDs for plastic optical fiber transmission.


EXXON ENTERPRISES, Optical Information Systems   1977 - 1979
Cofounder and Manager of Engineering and Manufacturing Departments
Designed and built one of the first semiconductor laser manufacturing plants. Senior Scientist responsible for all semiconductor laser and optical communications component research, development and production. Was one of three founders of OIS.
  • Developed laser bonding and packaging technology
  • Developed Zn diffusion process for improved current confinement and mode control
  • Increased epitaxial growth yield by decreasing defect density and improving layer morphology
  • Improved quality of facet coatings
  • Studied effect of mechanical stresses on cleaving yields
  • Filed patent disclosures on laser package (now in production use), new laser cleaving technique, new laser die bonding machine, and a new laser feedback technique

Member of Technical Staff
Made important contributions to several programs in compound semiconductor device technology:
  • Fabricated first avalanche photodiodes using AlGaSb alloys
  • Improved GaAsSb 1.06 micron avalanche photodiode from average gain = 2 to average gain = 12
  • Developed 50 ps AlGaAs avalanche photodiodes for study of picosecond optical phenomena
  • Contributed to: Characterization of AlGaAs solar cells, GaAsSb photoemitters.
